Kelly is a registered Patent Agent with both the Canadian Intellectual Property Office and the United States Patent and Trademark Office. He leads Rowand's quantum computing practice group and has an extensive software patent practice, with a particular focus on artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, large language models (LLMs), and fintech.

With over a decade of experience, Kelly has successfully drafted and prosecuted patent applications across Canada, the U.S., Europe, and Asia. His background in electrical engineering enables him to quickly understand complex technologies and develop patent filing strategies that align with clients’ commercial goals. He also advises on industrial design protection and broader IP strategy.

Kelly works with clients across sectors including AI, medical imaging, e-commerce, and energy systems. His practice spans software, data-driven innovation, and quantum computing, with an emphasis on translating complex technical developments into effective patent protection.

Kelly is also actively engaged in the advancement of the patent profession. He currently serves on both the Patent Knowledge Examination Item Development Advisory Group and the Patent Agent Skills Exam Advisory Group. He is a former Chair of the Toronto Intellectual Property Group and serves on the Information, Communication & Technology Committee of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada. He is also an active member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association.

Outside of the office, Kelly enjoys playing hockey, golf, and squash.
