Associate | Lawyer, Patent Agent and Trademark Agent
Peter is a lawyer, patent agent, trademark agent, and professional engineer. Before his legal career, he spent nearly a decade in industry, leading the design and delivery of enterprise and e-commerce software at IBM and developing automation software and advanced semiconductor packaging techniques in chip manufacturing. When Peter evaluates an invention, he isn’t working from a technical brief; he is drawing on years of designing, building, and shipping the same kinds of systems himself.
Peter has practiced intellectual property law for over fifteen years, including running his own IP firm before joining Rowand. Having built and managed a practice of his own, he understands firsthand the budget realities and strategic trade-offs entrepreneurs face when investing in intellectual property, and he brings that perspective to every engagement.
That background anchors a patent practice built around drafting and prosecuting applications in Canada and the United States. Working directly with innovators and technology teams, Peter translates inventions into clear, strategically crafted patent applications across a wide range of technologies - from mechanical devices to sophisticated computer systems, including enterprise software, fintech, payment systems, semiconductors, cybersecurity, cloud-based technologies, and artificial intelligence, including generative and agentic AI.
Software patents often live or die on subject-matter eligibility, and this is where Peter does some of his best work. He is particularly effective at overcoming eligibility rejections for computer-implemented inventions, regularly conducts examiner interviews to advocate directly for his clients, and has represented clients in appeals before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). His practice also includes patentability searches, complex infringement and validity opinions in Canada, and the coordination of international patent portfolios through a network of foreign associates.
On the brand side, Peter offers end-to-end trademark services - everything short of litigation. He helps clients identify what to protect and register to maximize protection while minimizing cost, conducts multi-jurisdiction clearance searches, and develops domestic and foreign filing strategies, carrying applications through prosecution and opposition proceedings, on to registration, and representing clients in expungement proceedings after registration. He acts for Canadian clients and works closely with foreign associates, including those filing into Canada through the Madrid Protocol or directly. He has also successfully represented clients in domain name disputes before the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
Beyond his client practice, Peter helps shape the standards of his own profession. He serves on CPATA’s Patent Agent Skills Exam Advisory Group and Patent Knowledge Examination Item Development Advisory Group - the groups that draft, validate, and mark the qualifying examinations Canada’s next generation of patent agents must pass.
Outside the office, Peter can usually be found on a hiking trail or in his garden.
